Aikido and Self Defense

  • People are feeling more and more vulnerable when they go out on the streets, especially at night and when alone. Knives are more commonplace. If we can help people feel more confident, and be self-aware and better prepared, I think that’s a worthwhile achievement
  • You will see lots of martial art comparisons and varied self-defence statements on social media. These are fun to watch and some are ok -  but most are not really helpful, as they can be biased and often quite negative
  • Any martial art will help prepare you for that unforeseen situation. Some better than others – but they all have their individual rules and limitations. A real-life attacker doesn’t play by the rules
  • If you have to respond to a real situation, the result will probably have more to do with how you manage the situation rather than how good you are at your martial art.
  • Aikido is not self-defence - but it can help you defend yourself and help you manage and control and aggressive situation.
  • If  confronted, you panic and freeze with fear (like a rabbit in the headlights), you won’t be able to open your bag of techniques. If your training can help you breathe, relax and move, then you are in with a chance of managing the situation
  • So, at  Aikido Wexford, we not only teach you the martial art of Aikido, we show you how Aikido can help you in your everyday life
