Beginners Guide

Aikido, like any Japanese Martial Art, is steeped in etiquette and tradition. This what attracts many people to this exciting art. Here in Aikido Wexford, although there are some important traditions which we want to maintain, we have a relaxed and friendly approach to our training

What to wear?
We normally practice in a Judo or Karate suit (Gi). However, there is no need to buy one until you are hooked on Aikido. We recommend you wear something loose and un-restricting like jog bottoms, with a top that is not to thin. A sports shirt type is fine. Shorts are not ideal. Please try to avoid anything with zips/buttons etc. Gi's from other martial arts are fine as well

Do I need to be fit?
No level of fitness is required to start, only a willingness to learn. Through Aikido you will improve your fitness and flexibility but there is nothing to prevent anyone having a go, unless you have medical advice against this activity. Our induction process covers a health declaration - so that we are aware of any factors that may limit or alter the way we approach your training

Basic Etiquette

  • Good manners and respect to the Sensei and fellow students at all times
  • Remember there is only one teacher on the mat
  • Bow when entering or leaving the training hall (Dojo)
  • The instructor is referred to as Sensei (Teacher)
  • Cleanliness and good personal hygiene are a requirement - and a clean Gi
  • Keep toes & finger nails cut short
  • Please remove jewellery and tape over any rings etc, which cannot be removed
  • Don’t walk on the mat with outdoor footwear
  • Wear Zori (slippers) to and from the mat
  • Switch mobile phones to silent
